How to Choose the Right Speed Bump for Your Parking Lot

Choose the wrong bump and you either fail to slow traffic (defeating the point) or damage every vehicle that crosses it. This guide walks through exactly what to look for.

Step 1: Speed Bump vs Speed Hump — Not the Same Thing

Buyers use these terms interchangeably, but engineers don't. Get this right first:

Step 2: Choose the Material

Three real options — plus one "don't do this":

Vulcanized Rubber (Recommended for most B2B use)

  • Pros: Weather-proof (-40°C to +80°C), UV-stable, absorbs vibration (quiet), lasts 8-12 years, easy to relocate
  • Cons: Costs more upfront than plastic ($40-80/m for standard 500×900×50 mm)
  • Best for: Parking lots, warehouses, industrial gates, private roads with any recurring traffic

Plastic (HDPE)

  • Pros: Cheapest upfront ($15-30/m), light to install
  • Cons: Cracks in cold climates, UV-degrades in 2-3 years, hollow-drum "thump" is loud, tends to come loose
  • Best for: Temporary event use, indoor low-speed areas

Concrete

  • Pros: Zero maintenance, lasts 20+ years
  • Cons: Permanent — you can never move it. Expensive to install ($150-300/m poured), damages vehicles harder than rubber, illegal in many private jurisdictions where you don't own the road surface
  • Best for: Public roads, permanent infrastructure only

Step 3: Get the Size Right

Standard modular units are 500 mm long (in the driving direction that vehicles cross). Chain multiple units to span your lane width:

Step 4: Confirm the Mounting

Rubber humps come pre-drilled for expansion bolts. Standard is 4 anchor holes per 500×900 mm unit. Check that your supplier ships the correct bolts (M12 × 100 mm expansion bolts for asphalt; M12 × 150 mm chemical anchors for concrete). Ask specifically — many suppliers ship the hump without bolts, then you're stuck sourcing them locally.

Step 5: Reflective vs Non-Reflective

The yellow stripes on rubber humps come in three grades:

  1. Painted stripes — cheapest, fade in 12 months
  2. Glass-bead reflective — good for headlight visibility, lasts 3-5 years, small price bump
  3. HIP prismatic reflective — brightest, lasts 8+ years, best for outdoor 24/7 use

For any outdoor installation where night traffic exists, glass-bead is the minimum you should accept.
