Modular Ramps for Wheelchair Accessibility: Buyer's Guide

Ramps look simple until you actually need to spec one for ADA compliance, a stroller, a hospital gurney, and a delivery cart — all crossing the same threshold. Miss the slope by 2 degrees and a wheelchair user tips backwards. This guide walks through the four ramp types and how to pick.

The Four Ramp Categories

1. Threshold Ramp

For crossing a low doorway threshold (typically 1-4 inches high). One-piece rubber or aluminum wedge, sits directly on the floor, no permanent installation.

  • Rise: 25-100 mm (1-4 in)
  • Best material: solid vulcanized rubber (quiet, non-slip, weatherproof)
  • Typical use: home doors, apartment thresholds, retail entrances
  • Cost: $30-120 per ramp

2. Curb Ramp

For crossing a low curb, driveway edge, or sidewalk step (typically 3-10 inches). Wider footprint than threshold, often with cable channel underneath.

  • Rise: 75-250 mm (3-10 in)
  • Best material: solid rubber for driveway/residential, HDPE for temporary/portable
  • Typical use: driveway kerbs, warehouse thresholds, delivery bay steps
  • Cost: $50-200 per ramp

3. Modular Ramp System

Longer ramp runs assembled from modular sections. Used where a single wedge isn't tall enough — porches, elevated walkways, event stages.

  • Rise: 250 mm to 2+ metres
  • Best material: powder-coated aluminum (for permanent), rubber+HDPE (portable)
  • Typical use: home accessibility, temporary event stages, medical facilities
  • Cost: $200-800+ per module, $1,500-6,000 for a complete run

4. Rubber Base Ramp (Cable Channel Type)

Combines curb-ramp function with an integrated cable channel underneath. Used at events where cables must pass under a wheelchair-crossable ramp.

  • Rise: 50-150 mm typical
  • Best material: solid vulcanized rubber
  • Typical use: expo booths, film shoots, temporary installations
  • Cost: $40-180 per ramp

ADA Slope Rules (Non-Negotiable)

The American ADA slope rules — internationally used as the de-facto benchmark — are:

For every 1 inch of vertical rise at 1:12 slope, you need 12 inches of ramp length. A 4-inch curb needs a 48-inch (1.2 m) ramp footprint.

Practical tip: if you're quoting a ramp for a hospital, care facility, retail store, or event with any wheelchair access, spec 1:12 minimum. If you can't fit that geometry, add a platform / landing pad and split into two shorter ramps.

Solid vulcanized rubber curb ramps handle up to about 10 tonnes per unit. HDPE ramps rate lower (2-3 tonnes typical). Aluminum ramps are only for pedestrian / mobility use — no vehicles.

Home Accessibility

  • Portable rubber threshold ramp (25-50 mm rise): $30-80
  • Portable rubber curb ramp (75-100 mm): $60-120
  • Modular aluminum ramp system for porch access (500-1000 mm rise): $500-2,000

Commercial / Facility

  • Retail entrance threshold ramp: $80-150, ADA compliant slope required
  • Loading dock curb ramp: $150-400 heavy-duty rubber
  • Modular event stage ramp: $2,000-6,000 for full system
  • Include handrails ($150-400 per side) for any rise above 6 inches

Non-Slip Surface — Do Not Compromise

The single biggest lawsuit vector on a wet ramp is slip-and-fall. Verify the ramp's coefficient of friction (COF):

  • Wet-slip COF ≥ 0.60 for ADA-compliant walking surface
  • Textured rubber (deep pyramid or diamond pattern) typically hits 0.70+
  • Smooth aluminum with abrasive strips: 0.55-0.65
  • Painted concrete without grit: 0.30-0.45 (unsafe)

Rubber Compound Choice for Ramps

Not all rubber is equal. For ramps in demanding conditions:

  • SBR (Styrene-Butadiene): standard, good for most temperate climates
  • EPDM: UV / ozone resistant — for outdoor permanent installations
  • Natural Rubber (NR): best rebound / grip — for pedestrian-only high-traffic
  • Recycled crumb rubber: cheapest, but not for load-bearing use
